Mine environment neutral drainage. program. Project S. , Contract. /SQ, p this book explores the complex biogeochemistry of acid mine drainage, rock drainage, and acid. The oxidation of sulphidic mine wastes and the consequent release of acid mine drainage and acid rock drainage, is one of the main strategic environmental issues facing the mining industry. The production of broken waste rock and tailings by mining operations can expose large amounts of pyrite and other sulphides to the effects of water and oxygen.

The authors present an overview of the environmental concerns, existing treatment and mitigation approaches and new ideas being tested to resolve acid mine drainage problems at mines visited in a recent MEND Prevention and Control committee tour of the Rouyn- Noranda/Val D'Or region (Abitibi) of Quebec. The mining areas visited were: Ste. Genevieve's Norebec-Manitou site, the Crown owned. Sincethe Mine Environment Neutral Drainage (MEND) program has worked to develop technologies to prevent and control acidic drainage. The program is directed by a multi-stakeholder committee, with members from the mining industry, federal and provincial governments, and non-government organizations.

Acidic drainage has long been recognised as the largest environmental liability facing the mining industry, and to a lesser extent, the public, through abandoned mines.

The Canadian Mine Environment Neutral Drainage (MEND) initiative was the first international multi-stakeholder program to develop scientifically based technologies to reduce the effect of acidic drainage.

A Canadian government program called Mine Environmental Neutral Drainage (MEND) has been working on reducing the risk and liability from acid rock drainage for nearly three decades. That liability was estimated in to be between $2 and $5 billion.

Canada formed the Mine Environmental Neutral Drainage organization in response to the AMD problem in This organization is a conglomeration of governmental personal, mining stakeholders, and academic personnel that has the goal of furthering the sustainability of mining operations in Canada.

This paper summarizes mine drainage research conducted from to at the Lynx underground mine. The poly-metallic mine is part of Boliden-Westmin's Myra Falls Operations (MFO), located in Strathcona Provincial Park.

The Lynx mine is situated on the lower slope of Phillips Ridge, receiving greater than two metres of precipitation annually. The mine's ore body is geologically hosted.

Acid mine drainage, acid and metalliferous drainage (AMD), or acid rock drainage (ARD) is the outflow of acidic water from metal mines or coal mines.

Acid rock drainage occurs naturally within some environments as part of the rock weathering process but is exacerbated by large-scale earth disturbances characteristic of mining and other large construction activities, usually within rocks.

Characterization of mine waste rocks and prediction of acid mine drainage (AMD) play an important role in preventing AMD. Although high-tech analytical methods have been highlighted for mineral characterization and quantification, simple testing methods are still practical ways to perform in a field laboratory in mines.

Thus, this study applied some simple testing methods to the. Information on best management practices was drawn from various reports and literature produced by provinces/territories, Environment Canada, the Mine Environment Neutral Drainage Program (MEND), the Government of Australia, the United Nations and the Mining Association of Canada, as well as from individual mining facilities and technical.
